Gingham and plaids were in heavy rotation at the resort collections: Dior, Rochas, Bottega Veneta and more. On nails, it looks freshest against a clear background-and the negative spaces in the center heighten the modern feeling. For this look, you need the perfect translucent backdrop—I used Sally Hansen Complete Care 7-in-1 Treatment. And then you actually need two different shades of any colour, one lighter and one darker, to give the illusion that a sheer crosshatching is being overlapped. I used two Sally Hansen Miracle Gel colours, a light periwinkle called 'Sugar Fix,' and a deeper blue called 'Tidal Wave‘ and I finished the look with Sally Hansen Miracle Gel Top Coat. Negative space is a trend that’s here to stay—it makes practically any look more clean and more fun at the same time. How to apply

Smooth Sally Hansen Complete Care 7-in-1 Treatment as a basecoat over every nail.

Place a thin strip of tape (metallic or paper) down the center of each nail lengthwise. Then paint your paler color in a stage line down either side of the tape (I used Sally Hansen Miracle Gel™ “Sugar Fix”).

Once all the vertical stripes are done, remove tape and repeat the process, again with the tape, again with the paler shade, creating horizontal stripes. TIP: Let the polish dry a bit before going on to the next step.

Using a striping brush dipped in the deeper shade, darken the points where the pale stripes intersect. I used Sally Hansen Miracle Gel™ "Tidal Wave".

When everything's dry, finish the look with Sally Hansen's new Miracle Gel™ Top Coat.
